Volunteers also are being sought for a day trip committee and to help in the Retiree Center office.

More fire training

The UC Davis Fire Department plans to burn another old house on university property west of Highway 113. The training target this time is the abandoned Baxter house, which most recently housed an avian lab research facility.

Earlier this year the department set fire to a house opposite the campus landfill along County Road 98.

The Baxter house is on Bee Biology Road near the north end of University Airport. The training exercise is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. June 30; Fire Chief Joe Perry said neighboring agencies may join in.

“I’ll be glad to see it go,” entomology professor Lynn Kimsey said of the Baxter house, which is on the grounds of the Harry H. Laidlaw Jr. Honey Bee Research Facility.

Kimsey is interim chair of the entomology department, which plans to develop a half-acre Haagen-Dazs Honey Bee Haven at the research facility this year.
