UC Davis is getting some new carpet, wall to wall, or, in this case, fence to fence on the Dairy Road Intramural Field. It is the first recreation field on the campus to get artificial turf — a switch that will allow the field to host more activity than ever before, because the new surface is more durable and it drains faster. Student-approved fees are paying for the turf as part of a $3.1 million Dairy Road field overhaul that also includes new lighting, landscaping and steel fence, and, for the first time, permanent restrooms. While waiting for the field, Campus Recreation and Unions has found alternative space for IM soccer this fall. In all likelihood, the Dairy Road field will open for IM play in the winter quarter, officials said. Read earlier coverage. (Gregory Urquiaga/UC Davis)
