Outdoor concerts are a UC Davis staple every summer, on the Davis and Sacramento campuses.

The Davis campus presents SummerMusic on the Quad; one concert has already taken place and one more is scheduled, on Aug. 27.

But first, the UC Davis Health System and its Community Advisory Board are presenting the party band Pop Fiction in the fourth annual summer concert on the Sacramento campus, from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 11. Organizers said the concert is free and open to the public, and will feature a kids zone with games, bounce house, crafts and other activities.

Besides being family-friendly, the concert will also be smoke-free, organizers said.

A new releases states that the concert is one way in which the health system thanks its neighbors and community members for their support, and students, faculty and staff for all of the hard work they do throughout the year.

“UC Davis Health System is essential to the health, well-being and progress of our community,” said Michael Saab, the Community Advisory Board member who chaired the planning for this year’s concert. “The board is dedicated to supporting those efforts with activities that foster strong relationships between the health system and Sacramento-area residents, including this fun concert.”

Organizers said Pop Fiction is an eight-member band that plays dance favorites and pop classics from the 190s through today.

The concert is set to take place on the lawn behind the Shriners children’s hospital, 45th and X streets. People are advised to bring blankets or lawn chairs.

You can pack your own suppers, or patronize food stands that will be selling such items as hot dogs, burgers, chicken and tri-tip sandwiches, ice cream and sodas.

SummerMusic on the Quad

Nortec Collective is scheduled to perform Aug. 27 in the second and final SummerMusic event on the Quad. SummerMusic is a presentation of the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts in partnership with Summer Sessions.

The all-ages concert is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m., with the Quad opening at 6 p.m. for picnicking (no alcoholic beverages allowed). Admission is free and open to the public.

The Nortec Collective is a Tijuana, Mexico-based ensemble that fuses electronica and techno with the norteño and tambora music of northern Mexico.

Pepe Mogt (aka Fussible) formed Nortec in 1999 as a four-person collective; today, each concert is by a two-man team. Fussible and Bostich (aka Ramon Amezcua) are due to perform at UC Davis.

Nortec has released two Tijuana Sessions albums (2001 and 2005), and two other albums, Tijuana Sound Machine (2008) and Corridos Urbanos (2010), earning three Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations in the best Latin rock-alternative album and best alternative music album categories.

The genre-spanning Nortec has drawn international praise from such publications as Rolling Stone, which raved about Nortec’s “updated lounge sounds for both dancing and chilling.”
