Three faculty members are assuming new duties as director or interim directors of institutes and centers:
Andrew Waterhouse, a faculty expert in wine chemistry, quality and analysis, has been named director of the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science.
“Professor Waterhouse comes to us with excellent experience in research, teaching and community partnership,” said Helene Dillard, dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. “UC Davis and our college are committed to Robert’s vision for the institute. We greatly value the foundational support of our partners, and we are dedicated to maintaining and building relationships with all who have contributed to our growth and success.”
Waterhouse, a professor of enology, is a former chair of the Department of Viticulture and Enology, and previously held the John D. Kinsella Chair in Food, Nutrition and Health. He served recently as an associate dean in Graduate Studies.
He will begin his new role Aug. 1, taking over for RMI Interim Director Jean-Xavier Guinard, a professor and sensory scientist in the Department of Food Science and Technology. Guinard will continue his world-class research and instruction in understanding the sensory properties of food and beverages and how they affect consumer behavior.

Joe DiNunzio, an assistant adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Management, has been named interim executive director of the school’s Mike and Renee Child Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, effective July 1.
“We are dedicated to empowering people with the skills and networks necessary to drive innovation and entrepreneurship,” said Professor Andrew Hargadon, the institute’s founder and faculty director. “As a former senior vice president at Disney overseeing Imagineering teams, a successful entrepreneur and an educator, Joe brings a wealth of experience.”
His resume also includes positions at Booz, Allen & Hamilton and Procter & Gamble; chief financial officer and board member for independent game developer Harebrained Schemes; chairman, chief executive officer and co-founder of 42 Entertainment, an advertising and alternative reality agency; and founding CEO of Z.com, a venture-backed digital media studio and network.
As a member of the GSM faculty, DiNunzio co-founded and leads the IMPACT consulting capstone course. Outside the GSM, he is president of Fido Management, a consulting firm that works with Fortune 500 and early-stage companies.

Dean Elizabeth Spiller of the College of Letters and Science announced that Robert Irwin, professor of Spanish and chair of the Graduate Group in Cultural Studies, will serve as interim director of the Hemispheric Institute on the Americas in 2018-19.
HIA Director Charles Walker, professor of history, will be on sabbatical next year. Plus, he has a 2018 fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies in support of his research on a project he has titled “Violence and Its Long Shadow: The Shining Path in Peru.”
In his research, Walker is asking how a Maoist group took hold in Peru and how this conflict resulted in at least 70,000 dead. The project contextualizes the Shining Path in the history of global violence and terror, and studies its long-term impact on Peru as well as the efforts of and responses to Peru’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
