Clement Stokes is the campus’s new director of emergency management and mission continuity. He previously served as director of emergency management at Northwestern University for seven years.

Part of the Safety Services unit, he will work closely with the Event and Crisis Management Team, chaired by the chancellor and provost, as well as emergency officials throughout the region.

Stokes has management and strategic consulting experience in public health, emergency management, business continuity and risk management. He has been an emergency planning officer with the District of Columbia Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency. As an on-site consultant, he worked in support of Hurricane Katrina at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and at the federal departments of Health and Human Services and Homeland Security.

Stokes is certified as both an emergency manager and business continuity professional. He holds a bachelor's degree in communications from the University of Notre Dame and a master's in threat and response management from the University of Chicago.

Blood drive numbers ‘continue to grow’

Here are the results from last week’s Blood and Marrow Drive: 681 people gave blood and 47 signed up for the Be the Match bone marrow registry. “What a wonderful way to start 2016 off on such a positive note!” said Felicia Roper of BloodSource.

She said 864 people turned out for the two-day drive (not everyone can complete the donation process, for a variety of reasons). “Wow, the support of the BloodSource blood drives on the UC Davis campus just continues to grow,” Roper said. “Thank you so much.”

BloodSource’s next visit is scheduled in April, in what will be the campus’s first-ever three-day blood drive: Tuesday-Thursday, April 19-21.

Your Aggie football schedule for 2016

The Aggie football schedule is out for 2016. The Ags, beginning their fifth season in the Big Sky Conference, will play five games at home:

• Sept. 10 — Southern Oregon
• Sept. 24 — Weber State
• Oct. 15 — Northern Colorado (homecoming)
• Nov. 5 — Portland State
• Nov. 19 — Sacramento State

The Aggies open the season Sept. 3 at Oregon, the first of three nonconference matchups. The others are Southern Oregon at Aggie Stadium and Wyoming (Sept. 17) on the road.

Other away games: Eastern Washington (Oct. 1), Southern Utah (Oct. 8), Cal Poly (Oct. 22) and Montana State (Nov. 12). The Aggies have a bye Oct. 29.

Arraignment set in Cuarto bike theft

Caught by the Yolo County sheriff himself, the suspect in a Jan. 7 campus bike theft was due for arraignment today (Feb. 2) in Yolo Superior Court.

Dateline UC Davis reported incorrectly Jan. 26 that campus police had arrested David Goelz, 38, of West Sacramento, the day of the alleged theft. In fact, police only detained him that morning while a witness identified him as the man who was seen cutting the lock off a bicycle at Cuarto Residence Halls, officers said. But they could not determine who owned the bike, so officers let Goelz go.

Subsequently, police tracked down the owner, who filed a stolen-bike report, and investigators forwarded the case to the district attorney’s office. Last Friday (Jan. 29), according to the chief deputy district attorney, the office filed a charge of petty theft against Goelz.

Dateline’s original story told how Sheriff Ed Prieto stopped the suspect on Highway 113 after seeing him ride down the onramp from Russell Boulevard, meet up with a pickup that had stopped along the highway, throw the bike into the truck and then hop into the passenger side. Prieto and one of his deputies heard a radio report about the bike theft at Cuarto, so they contacted campus police, who arrived to take over the investigation.
