More Neri Sculptures added to Anderson Collection at Stanford now on display

The Anderson Collection at Stanford University is displaying 11 new acquisitions and more works from other collections by sculptor Manuel Neri, one of the firest-generation art faculty at UC Davis. The new works were gifted by The Manuel Neri Trust.

Neri, a California native, is known for working across media, and the new acquisitions include an important early aluminum sculpture of the artist Joan Brown, a marble sculpture, a group of bronze reliefs cast from plaster originals (which were used as models for unique marble carvings) and eight related works on paper.

A special exhibition of the new works, “Manuel Neri: Assertion of the Figure,” started in September and runs through Feb. 12, 2018. This exhibition is organized by the Anderson Collection at Stanford University in celebration of a gift from The Manuel Neri Trust. Additional works on loan come from the Collection of Harry W. and Mary Margaret Anderson, The Manuel Neri Trust, and Hackett Mill, San Francisco.

The UC Davis Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art holds more than 150 works by Neri in its collections that are shown at special exhibitions.

Professor Emerita Cornelia Schulz at Patricia Sweetow Gallery

The San Francisco Chronicle recently took note of Cornelia Schulz's work: “In the galleries, color everywhere, unconventionally applied” — Paint on its own terms. Schulz is a UC Davis art faculty emerita.

Chronicle art critic Charles Desmarais says it best: Cornelia Schulz is a venerated abstract artist who taught at UC Davis for three decades. Sarcastically gloppy and garishly colorful, they are all brag and bluster — grand gesture, stunted by canvases less than a foot square. They are mock-heroic exercises as loaded with irony a s any painting of the current moment, even as they seduce formally (though their lusciousness of color and detail) and narratively (with references to landscape and the forces of nature).

Schulz’s paintings are at Patricia Sweetow Gallery (315 Potrero Ave., San Francisco) through Dec. 16.
