Quick, get your costumes

Haunting times are just around the corner, so reserve your time to look at costumes now. This Halloween, transform yourself by visiting The Enchanted Cellar, a costume rental service operated by the UC Davis College of Letters and Science’s Department of Theatre and Dance.

The collection features inspired by “Game of Thrones,” “Harry Potter,” “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” characters along with movie stars and superheroes, animated favorites, fairies, and original Steampunk. Many iconic fashion periods are represented too, such as the 1920s, Victorian England and the French Court of Marie Antoinette.

“We have kits starting at $35 which include all accessories head-to-toe,” said Roxanne Femling, director of the costume shop. “Or people can make an individual appointment with one of our costume consultants who will make up a kit from our stock and customers can put together their own character. Come have fun with it!”

The Enchanted Cellar is located in Room 17 on the lower level of Wright Hall, on campus near the Ann E. Pitzer Center. Although appointments are preferred, walk-in hours are Oct. 24-26 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Oct. 29-31 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Saturday Oct. 27 is by appointment only and must be booked 24 hours in advance.

To set up an appointment, please contact Roxanne Femling at rcfemling@ucdavis.edu or call 530-752-0740. Or check them out on Facebook at “The Enchanted Cellar Costume Rentals.”

Soo-Yeon Lyuh, haegeum, and Ellen Ruth Rose, viola, at noon concert

Sister instruments from two traditions, Korean fiddle and viola, come together in a number of splendid new works performed by virtuosic proponents of new music Soo-yeon Lyuh and Ellen Ruth Rose Thursday at noon in the Shinkoskey Noon Concert. Featuring pieces by Jean Ahn, Addie Camsuzou, Josiah Catalan, Lily Chen, Kyle Hovatter, and Fang-Wei Luo.

Concert organizers say Soo-Yeon Lyuh is a master of the haegeum, a two-stringed Korean bowed instrument. She possesses not only flawless technique and a full command of the haegeum’s traditional repertoire, but is also widely recognized for promoting the creation of new pieces for haegeum.
