When I entered UC Davis, it took time to learn how to incorporate the system of higher education into my life. I was unfamiliar and not accustomed to the life and culture of an undergraduate student.
School was my main priority. I focused all my attention on ensuring that my academic journey was steady. However, I knew I also needed to balance education and fun to create the ultimate university experience. I found balance through a routine, time outside the classroom and new experiences. Below are four tips that helped me balance school and social life!
1. Create a routine
A routine can help you find time for both your responsibilities and new activities. I created a routine to identify open spaces in my schedule. I find it helpful to first look at all my responsibilities and then build my day around them. This system makes me feel more relaxed and fulfilled because I know when my schedule leaves more room for free time and when I actually need to buckle down.
2. Explore and take in your surroundings
A new place might feel scary at first, but your surroundings can offer peace and comfort. I take time out of my day to observe life around me and discover interests outside my education.
Each new place I visit in Davis helps me feel more familiar with my new home. You benefit from each interaction and experience you seek out. Don’t let fear hold you back. Go out and make new memories!
3. Make each day intentional
I start each day with goals for how I want to spend my time. I search for campus clubs, organizations and activities that add something positive to my day. I make time for both my interests and relaxation.
Check your campus for events, clubs and activities that match your interests. I often visit the UC Davis Memorial Union to explore the various clubs that promote their activities. There are also pop-up events at UC Davis every day and bulletin boards feature flyers for additional events. These resources keep me informed about campus life and help me plan my week.
4. Embrace new experiences
I prioritize my well-being and try new things each week. One week during my second year, I decided to check out the Aggie Fiction Club, which hosted a book signing. I went, entered a raffle and won a signed copy of the book. I stepped out of my comfort zone and walked away with a new memory to cherish.
Unforgettable moments come from the right balance of education and leisure. Fun experiences give you time to unwind, reduce stress and step away from school. You never know what the day might bring, so why not try something new?
Protect your balance
An active week helps me balance school and social life. I make sure not to lose myself in school and leave room for experiences outside the classroom. This balance helps me prevent exhaustion and actually enjoy my time at college.
