Despite travel and physical distance restrictions implemented during this coronavirus pandemic, opportunities to take part in global learning this summer still abound, and the Global Learning Hub within Global Affairs at UC Davis is here to help.
Remote and virtual learning opportunities were already becoming a more commonplace practice, and more organizations have joined the trend. Consider a virtual internship, remote community-engaged learning experience, or online course to stay globally engaged while improving your skills and employability. Keep reading for tools you can use to find a global summer learning experience that will connect you with communities and organizations all over the world.
1. UC Davis Global Learning Hub Search Tool
Browse a curated list of virtual global learning experiences that includes internships, volunteer opportunities and other online content related to global learning. Opportunities highlighted within the Global Learning Hub are often in partnership with a third-party organization which provides, for example, internship placement in the country of your choice, career coach, online language classes, online curriculum, weekly group discussions, project supervision, certificate of completion and/or digital badging. Many opportunities are free, but some organizations do charge a fee for participation. Be sure to check what is included when you are comparing programs.
2. UC Davis Global Learning Hub, Virtual Global Learning Opportunities
Explore online programs and opportunities that further your global learning and connect you with organizations all over the globe. In addition to remote internships and community-engaged learning opportunities, you will find free remote global learning modules and trainings. For example, you can search through over 1,200 downloadable lectures and modules through the United Nations SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) Academy, and UN’s UNITAR and eLearn sites).
3. GoinGlobal
Use your UC Davis Kerberos authentication to access a database of millions of global internship and job postings on GoinGlobal. Check out how to conduct an internship search in GoinGlobal. To identify remote opportunities, conduct different searches using “remote”, “virtual”, “work from home” or “telework” as exact phrases in the keyword search or advanced search under “Jobs.” In addition to a searchable job and internship database by country, GoinGlobal has career guides with country- and city-specific information to help you prepare for working, even remotely, in a new cultural setting.
4. Handshake
Take advantage of your UC Davis Handshake account with the Internship and Career Center to find a remote internship that is right for you. Skim the list of remote internships to find a match. Once you find a remote opportunity you are interested in applying for, be sure to check out the Internship and Career Center’s helpful short video tutorials. Topics include: formatting and tailoring your resume, job searching in uncertain times, transferable skills, informational interviews, artificial intelligence interviews and acing your video interview — to name a few.
5. Other online search engines
Expand your search for online opportunities by using Chegg Internships, Virtual Internships, and WayUp to locate remote internships; and Catchafire, Omprakash, and VolunteerMatch to pinpoint virtual community-engaged or volunteer opportunities. To keep from feeling overwhelmed by all of the options and results, use filters and keywords to narrow your search results, and save your searches and/or sign up for updates to stay informed of new opportunities.
