Applications are now being accepted from staff and-or nonsenate academic employees interested in serving as staff adviser to the Board of Regents. Whomever is selected will serve for one year as the staff adviser designate, 2014-15, then move up to adviser for a year, 2015-16.
The application period opened today (Jan. 24) and runs through March 7. Staff interested in public policy, advocacy and understanding the future direction of the university are encouraged to apply.
The staff adviser and staff adviser designate participate in open sessions of the Board of Regents and designated committees, bringing the voice and perspective of staff and nonsenate academic employees to regents' deliberations. The advisers do not vote.
The advisers try to visit as many campuses as possible to gather input from staff.
The 2013-14 staff adviser, Kathy Barton, executive director of strategic initiatives, School of Medicine, UC Riverside, said: “Given the breadth of challenges facing the university, it’s more important than ever to have the perspective of UC staff on the board.
“As a staff adviser, you can have a real impact in guiding UC forward during this critical time.”
When Barton’s term ends in June, the staff adviser designate, Donna Coyne, associate director of admissions, UC Santa Barbara, will move up to adviser.
More information is available online and from local human resources offices. Questions about the position or the application process should be directed to Juliann Martinez, UCOP Employee Relations, by phone, (510) 287-3331, or email.
