Darlene “Dar” Hunter has done a ton of volunteer work for Intercollegiate Athletics while working elsewhere at UC Davis for nearly five decades. Now, ICA is presenting her with a Special Recognition Award.
Her father, Milt Silva, who had a long UC Davis career as a research associate in plant pathology, received the same award in 1995, honoring his 33 years of volunteer work for track, baseball, football and basketball. Edie, his wife, had a long UC Davis career, too, working for three chancellors.

The hall of fame dinner and induction ceremony, open to the public, will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, in the ARC Ballroom. Tickets are $75 and are available online.

Daughter Dar has topped them both, putting in 47 years. (Total length of employment for parents and daughter: 108 years.) All of her time has been with Undergraduate Admissions, as she worked her way up the ranks to senior director.
Hunter attended Aggie events as a child and often accompanied her father during his volunteer work for athletics. She started her own volunteer service in 1972 with the Cal Aggie Boosters and would serve on the implementation team for the boosters’ transition from off-campus entity to departmental unit (now known as Team Aggie), the inaugural fundraising committee and the Team Aggie board (she was the presiding officer in the 1990s).
She assisted over the years with such projects as the Sochor Invitational golf fundraiser, and served on numerous committees, including the Marya Welch Initiative (now underway).
Perhaps her longest service was on the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame Committee, which she chaired for more than three decades. Fittingly, she will receive her Special Recognition Award at a hall of fame induction ceremony — during Homecoming Weekend this fall.
The induction ceremony also will include the presentation of an Aggie Legacy Award to Mark Grieb, former UC Davis quarterback and Arena Football League standout.
