Bike Bounty: Auction and 4-Day Bike Barn Sale

Bikes are special every day at UC Davis (well, except, perhaps, when we’re riding in the rain!), so we’re hard-pressed to think of a way to give bikes even more attention. But we’ll give it the old college try over the next week or so with the campus’s biannual Bike Auction and the ASUCD Bike Barn’s annual “yard” sale.

This year, the yard sale turns into a garage sale in the barn’s center portion, formerly used by Outdoor Adventures. The Bike Barn, which previously occupied the barn’s south end, took over the center portion last year to use as a warehouse and parts room.

So, after 17 years of yard sales, the Bike Barn is “inviting people to come inside, where literally everything we stock will be available to them,” said Robert St-Cyr, general manager.

The sale is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, May 2-4. Discounts will range from 10 percent to 50 percent on tools, parts and accessories; and 10 percent to 35 percent on new and used bikes. All sales are final and limited to stock on hand.

The sale is open to all, including the general public. The first day coincides with the Bike Auction, Saturday, April 30, so people at that event will receive coupons to use at the Bike Barn sale.

The Bike Auction will be held, as usual, on the first floor of The Pavilion parking garage (at the campus’s west entry) off Hutchison Drive. Preview time starts at 7:30 a.m., and the auction starts at 9 and continues until all bikes have gone up for bid.

The Bicycle Program, part of Transportation Services, runs the auctions. Each auction typically comprises more than 400 bikes of all descriptions and conditions, bikes that have not been claimed in a specified number of days after being found abandoned on campus. The variety typically includes cruisers, mountain bikes, road bikes, BMX and even a few children’s bikes. Average sale price at the last auction was $44.

Terms: cash, check, Visa or MasterCard with proper identification. All merchandise sold where is, as is.
