Updated 9 a.m. Sept. 11: Brush Truck 34 has been reassigned and is now helping to fight the North Complex Fire, which spans Plumas, Butte and Yuba counties. That fire is 252,534 acres and is 23 percent contained, Cal Fire said this morning.
The UC Davis Fire Department’s Brush Truck 34 returned to campus just long enough to get a fresh crew and head for Clear Lake to be ready to respond to any new fires in the area, Fire Chief Nate Trauernicht said.
Cal Fire released the campus crew Sunday (Sept. 6) from the LNU Lightning Complex, spanning five counties (Lake, Napa, Solano, Sonoma and Yolo counties) and covering 375,209 acres, with containment reported at 91 percent this morning (Sept. 8).
Returning home on Brush 34 were Capt. Kyle Dubs, engineer Derek Carthy, and firefighters Mike Cullen and Meggie Elledge. Capt. Steve Dunn, a strike team leader who left campus to fight the Jones Fire west of Nevada City before being assigned to a separate team at the LNU Lightning Complex, returned to campus last week.
Despite the progress fire crews have made on existing fires, strong winds and low humidity have created red flag warning conditions, according to the National Weather Service, and the new UC Davis team will be part of a group assigned to respond to any new fires. The new team: Capt. Paul Rush, engineer Ben Rizzo, and firefighters Cara Martinez and Avery White.
Brush 34 — with various crews — has now been away from campus fighting wildfires since Aug. 13.
