Dining Services’ Silo Market, King Hall Coffee, The Gunrock and Latitude Market will reopen in January after being closed in fall quarter due to a shortage of student employees. In addition, California Coffee — built in conjunction with California Hall — is due to open for the first time in early February.

“This will be the first time — knock on wood — that Dining Services will have our entire portfolio of dining options open since becoming self-operated,” said Kraig Brady, director, referring to UC Davis' taking over food and coffee operations from vendor Sodexo in 2017.

But, while the outlook for coffee and food is good for the new year, our options are limited during winter break, considering all of the following are closed: Dining Services’ Scrubs Café, Peet’s Coffee at the Activities and Recreation Center, Silo (including Spokes Grill, Crêpe Bistro and Peet’s Coffee), Latitude Restaurant, Sage Street Market Café (at UC Davis West Village), and the Segundo, Tercero and Cuarto dining commons and markets; and the ASUCD’s Coffee House, Coho South Café and Bio Brew Coffee.

That leaves the following:

• The Market at the MU (food and coffee)
  • Monday-Friday, Dec. 13-22 — 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
  • Dec. 23-Jan. 1 — Closed
• The Market at the ARC (food, no coffee)
  • Monday-Friday, Dec. 13-17 — 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
  • Saturday-Sunday, Dec. 18-19 — noon-5 p.m.
  • Monday-Wednesday, Dec. 20-22 — 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m.
  • Thursday-Sunday, Dec. 23-26 — Closed
  • Monday-Thursday, Dec. 27-30 — 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • Dec. 31-Jan. 1 — Closed
  • Sunday, Jan. 2 — noon-5 p.m.

Dining Services

Brady outlined Dining Services’ “coming-out-of-winter-break” target plan to reopen the places impacted by the labor shortage:

• Latitude Market, reopening Jan. 3
• King Hall Coffee, reopening Jan. 5
• Silo Market, reopening Jan. 11
• Gunrock Restaurant, reopening Jan. 19
• California Coffee (outside California Hall), opening for the first time, early February

Latitude Restaurant, which adjoins the market of the same name, will also reopen Jan. 3. The restaurant, featuring globally-themed entrees, operated during fall quarter and is closed now for winter break.

Gunrock, a sit-down restaurant in the South Silo, will reopen with a new theme, Aggie Pride, in support of UC Davis athletics, and a new, fast-casual menu. Plus, the restaurant is bringing in Davis’ Sudwerk Brewing Co. as beer and wine partner.

“The Gunrock will feature our local beers as well as classic fare like burgers, tri-tip sandwiches, nachos and more,” Brady said.

“In addition, we have partnered with DirecTV and added multiple TVs to watch your favorite sporting events. Come grab a burger, a beverage and enjoy the game. Go Ags!”

The Coffee House

This ASUCD operation in the Memorial Union will start the winter quarter with limited operations (including Friday closures), the same as fall quarter. But not for long.

“We are expecting an influx of approximately 130 new student staff in early January,” said Darin Schluep, CoHo director. “The plan is to strategically reopen platforms, expand hours, etc., as the student staffing allows, with the priority being our Ciao Pizza platform and Friday service.

“We’ll then look at expanding hours in our Marketplace (TxMx and Fickle Pickle Deli) and bring our last two service platforms, Cooks and Croutons, back online.”

Weekend operations might have to wait until spring quarter, Schluep said, but at least the CoHo will be back to normal Monday through Friday.

“We very much appreciate our customers’ continued patience and support,” Schluep said. “We’re very thankful and definitely feel an obligation to reward that patience with improved and expanded service as soon as our staffing levels will allow.”

The CoHo South Café in the Student Community Center resumed Friday service two weeks ago and will continue operating five days a week in winter quarter, 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. The CoHo’s other satellite operation, Bio Brew Coffee in the Sciences Lab Building, may not reopen until spring.
