The series of storms battering the region lately have taken a toll on the campus's trees, soaking the ground and then blowing over several large specimens. The campus was well prepared for the onslaught of rain, but the sustained deluge combined with strong winds led to a situation campus crews were unable to prevent.
“The soil’s just so wet — there’s not much we can do when the wind blows like this,” said Cary Avery, who leads Grounds and Landscape Services.
Read about a tree that fell onto Haring Hall (at top) and another that fell near Shields Library, and read about five other trees that fell previously, including one near the Student Community Center (above) and in Parking Lot 35 (below).
Elsewhere on campus, life continued on as the rain battered students, faculty and staff.

And the weather wasn’t able to keep donors away from a winter blood drive that came in the midst of a shortage of blood donations.
Facebook: Weather doesn’t stop blood drive participants
Blood Drives at UC Davis: Without a doubt, we can honestly say our blood donors are the best. We cannot thank you all enough for your generosity, kindness and patience to wait out in the cold and rainy weather to DONATE BLOOD.
During the two days of our winter quarter blood drive, we’ve collected a total of 512 PINTS OF LIFE SAVING BLOOD, carrying the potential to save up to 1,024 people!
During this blood drive, we’ve had 723 registered participants, 239 of those being first time donors, and hundreds of volunteers to contribute to the purpose, and we are so grateful for you all. The participation of our UC Davis community is imperative for the success of our blood drives, so we'd like to say THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!
