THE DOWNLOAD: Fireproof Shield, Matching the Manetti Shrem

Scientists may not have access to vibranium, but they can build a shield that does some of the same things as the one carried by Captain America.

Ricardo Castro, a professor of materials science and engineering, teaches “Materials Marvels: Science of Superheroes,” which introduces undergraduates to materials science and engineering concepts through superhero technology. In the above video, he demonstrates how a shield can block flames.

Read more about Castro’s Engineering Superheroes Initiative, which seeks to engag kids in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, through superheroes.

Matching the Manetti Shrem

Michelle Satterlee ’10 spends a lot of time looking at art, and looking like art. She is the gallery director at Elliott Fouts Gallery in Sacramento, and also runs an Instagram account and website where she shows off outfits that match art in her gallery and elsewhere. She recently posted a series of photos matching paintings from the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art’s exhibition, “Wayne Thiebaud Influencer: A New Generation.”

“This series is very dear to me and was especially exciting to create because I graduated from UC Davis with a degree in art history in 2010,” Satterlee wrote. Many of you know that Wayne Thiebaud is my favorite artist and much of that is due to the fact that I was fortunate enough to take the final class he taught at UC Davis: ‘ART 148: Theory and Criticism: Painting and Sculpture.’”
