UC Davis’ new women’s equestrian team kicked off its first campaign in a big way, at home, last Thursday afternoon (Jan. 31), defeating United Equestrian Conference rival No. 9 Delaware State.

The Aggies captured a pair of most outstanding player awards — one for senior Lilly Ulrich (equitation over fences) and the other for freshman Keely Laughlin (equitation on the flat) — en route to a 10-5 win over the Hornets.

The Aggies will next compete Saturday, Feb. 16, at No. 4 Texas A&M. Two more road meets will follow: Feb. 21 at No. 7 Texas Christian University and Feb. 22 at No. 2 Southern Methodist University.

After that, the Aggies return home for a meet with Fresno State at noon Saturday, March 2.

Sacramento television channel KCRA covered the new team's first meet, including the surprising size of the crowd in attendance, in the video below.

Meanwhile, the home for another new sport is coming together. The four courts that will host the women's beach volleyball team are nearly complete, and crews just need a little more dry weather to finish up, Matt Blankenheim of Design and Construction Management said.

That team will host its first home games the weekend of Picnic Day, facing off against the University of Oregon twice on Friday, April 12, then playing host to a match between Oregon and the University of the Pacific the morning of Picnic Day, April 13, before an afternoon contest against Pacific.

The beach volleyball team's schedule is available on the Athletics website.
