About 50 members of the campus community will participate in an emergency training exercise on campus this Thursday (Sept. 29).

The tabletop exercise, which comes amid National Preparedness Month, will take place in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and a Mrak Hall meeting room; there will be no field component.

Participants include members of the Event and Crisis Management Team, the executive-level oversight and strategic decision-making body during emergencies; and staff who are part of the EOC Team, which serves as a hub to coordinate emergency response.

The exercise will ask campus leaders and the EOC Team to grapple with policy issues and coordinate response in the aftermath of an active shooter incidence in Dutton Hall, which houses several student service units.

Clement Stokes, director of Emergency Management and Mission Continuity, said the participants will deal with such issues as communicating with the campus, providing counseling support, reuniting students and parents who converge on campus, managing the presence of news media, relocating key functions and planning for the recovery of building operations

The day's activities will build on a full-scale field exercise in August that summoned police, fire and other personnel to deal with an active shooter scenario in the same building.
