The forecast calls for chilly temperatures in Davis campus buildings on weekends and holidays during winter break, as the university once again cuts back on the heat to save energy. So, if you’re working, be sure to bring an extra sweater!

Other important notes for winter break:

• The Police Department will be fully staffed, but officers will not have the benefit of thousands of students and employees to help keep an eye on things. So, it’s more important than ever for those of us who are coming to work, to stay alert and report any suspicious activity. Call 911 or (530) 752-1230.

• Facilities Management will have personnel available to deal with buildings and grounds emergencies; call the customer service center, (530) 752-1655, for assistance.

Heatless holidays and weekends

Under the energy-conservation plan, heat will be shut off in most buildings (except labs) on the weekends of Dec. 21-22 and 28-29, and the four administrative holidays, Tuesday-Wednesday, Dec. 24-25 and Dec. 31-Jan. 1.

As for the days in between, Dec. 23, 26, 27 and 30, the heat will come on at the normal time, then will go off at 10 p.m. (Many employees will be off one or more of those days — using vacation or compensatory time — combining them with the administrative holidays for a longer winter break.)

This a less aggressive strategy than in previous years, when Facilities Management shut off the heat all through winter break, including the “in between” days.

The change this year stems from the extreme cold weather that the region has seen. “It is problematic to have buildings go without any heat for long periods when the temperature is so low, and the energy savings would be overshadowed by the negative impact we would have on our systems (think frozen, bursting pipes and such)," said Michelle Arnold Dominguez, communications and training manager for Facilities Management.

“We don’t consider taking that risk to be worth it, so buildings will not be entirely shut down.”

Campus coffee and food outlets are scaling back services and hours next week, Dec. 16-20, and all will be closed from Dec. 21 until at least Jan. 1. See box for details.

Unitrans is running finals service through Friday (Dec. 13), then weekend or break service through Jan. 5 (except no service on Dec. 24-25 and Dec. 31-Jan. 1).

The Davis-Sacramento shuttle will operate on a reduced schedule from Dec. 16 to Jan. 1, and will not run on the four administrative holidays, Dec. 24-25 and Dec. 31-Jan. 1.

The Davis-Berkeley shuttle will operate on a reduced schedule from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1, including New Year’s Eve. There will be no service, however, on the other three administrative holidays, Dec. 24-25 and Jan. 1.
