Kids Can Get Their Feet Wet Learning About Tahoe

Children ages 8 and older are invited to spend the day at Lake Tahoe on Friday, Aug. 3, learning about the environmental challenges facing the Tahoe Basin.

The Second Annual Children's Environmental Science Day is a free event sponsored by The Incline Academy in cooperation with the UC Davis Tahoe Research Group and the Lake Tahoe Environmental Education Coalition.

Registered attendees will gather at Sand Harbor State Park, on the northeastern shore of Lake Tahoe, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. They will be supervised by Incline Academy teachers. Lunch will be provided, plus T-shirts and lots of interesting materials to take home.

The day will include interactive science demonstrations by UC Davis scientists; a Sand Harbor geology tour by University of Nevada, Reno, scientists; bird watching with the Audubon Society; a boat ride on the Paradise Hornblower to view lake studies done by the UC Davis Tahoe Research Group; crafts from The League to Save Lake Tahoe; and more.

A highlight of the day will be the trip aboard the Paradise Hornblower to view demonstrations that will be given aboard the UC Davis research vessel the John LeConte, which will be moored alongside.

"Giving children an education in conservation has been extremely important for addressing the problems in the Tahoe Basin. After all, they are the generation that will inherit Tahoe," said Charles Goldman, a UC Davis professor of environmental science and policy and director of the Tahoe Research Group, who will be one of the workshop leaders.

Attendance is limited. To register, call The Incline Academy at (775) 831-5828. The Incline Academy is a secular, private school for pre-K through eighth-grade students in Incline Village, Nev.
