Aliki Dragona isn’t just a Summer Abroad program leader this year, she’s the newly appointed director of faculty-led programs in UC Davis Study Abroad.
She succeeds Eric Schroeder, and, like him, Dragona is a lecturer in the University Writing Program, Schroeder is retiring from UC Davis at the end of June.
Dragona, who joined UC Davis in 1990, was scheduled to fly out Monday (June 23) to lead the 13th edition of her Summer Abroad program, “Travelers in Greece.”
Her appointment as faculty director is effective July 1. William B. Lacy announced the appointment in one of his last official acts before stepping down last week as vice provost of University Outreach and International Programs.
“Aliki brings a dozen years of excellent study abroad teaching experience to this administrative position,” Lacy said. “I was fortunate to observe Aliki’s superior teaching skills in a study abroad context when I visited her class in Greece a few years ago. In conversations with her, I was equally impressed by her knowledge, creativity and insights of the opportunities and challenges facing study abroad programs.”
UC Davis offers more than 50 faculty-led programs each year — in Summer Abroad, Quarter Abroad, Summer Internships and Seminars Abroad — serving some 800 UC Davis students plus an additional 250 students from other UCs and other universities around the United States.
Dragona teaches three courses in the University Writing Program, where she has served as the assistant director for lower division writing since 2008. She received an Excellence in Teaching Award from the Academic Federation in 2006.
Besides leading Dragona is designing a new Education Abroad course on international education.
She was born in Paris and raised in Athens, and taught composition and literature at Deree College, the American College of Greece, for two years. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Athens (1984), then continued her education at Binghamton University (State University of New York), receiving a master’s (1987) and a doctorate (1991) in general literature and rhetoric.
Associate Vice Provost Adrienne Martín said: “Aliki brings extensive experience and knowledge of study abroad programs to this position and we are excited to have her aboard.”

In announcing Reed’s appointment, they described her as a highly skilled leader with a passion for the training and development of staff. “She brings excitement and enthusiasm to this important director role,” they said. “Under her leadership the campus plans to move forward in strengthening the impact and effectiveness of the center.”
Reed is vice chair of the Administrative Managers Group, or ADMAN, in line to serve as the chair in 2014-15.
