ASUCD blood drive next week

People who come to the ASUCD Blood and Marrow Drive next week will receive free T-shirts, and, if you wear it the next time you come to donate, you won't even have to roll up your sleeve!

The blood draw and T-shirt giveaway is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, April 13 and 14, in Freeborn Hall.

Besides T-shirts, participants also will receive entries in iPod and fuel card drawings.

BloodSource, which runs the blood and marrow drive, advises prospective donors to drink plenty of fluids and to eat beforehand, and to bring photo identification.

Brief downtime for some computing services

Several UC Davis computing services will be briefly unavailable the evening of Thursday, April 14, while the campus improves its Central Authentication Service, or CAS.

Starting at 6 p.m. that day, Information and Educational Technology will cut over to a "high availability" version of CAS. The department has sent additional information to campus technologists about work they might need to do to prepare for the change.

Many computing services will be unavailable for a few minutes during the cutover. They include, but are not limited to, MyUCDavis, SmartSite and Sympa. People who cannot access the services during the cutover should not have to do anything except wait a short period for access to resume.

TRANSITION: Med center names regional affiliations officer

The UC Davis Medical Center announced the appointment of Gerald Birk as regional affiliations officer, to help make the medical center's expertise more accessible to people throughout Northern California.

Specifically, Birk is charged with building and strengthening the medical center's relationships with stand-alone health care providers — large and small hospitals, health care practices and physician groups — to link them with UC Davis’ advanced medical and technological expertise.

“It’s an incredible time to be able to develop strategies to ensure that the people of Northern California have access to the best possible care in this rapidly changing landscape," Birk said.

Memorial service for Marion Miller

A campus memorial service for environmental toxicology professor Marion Miller is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, April 11, at the Conference Center (at the campus's south entry). A reception will follow.

Miller died Feb. 25 at the age of 55.
