The ASUCD announced a pair of forums, “Choose Your Congressperson,” starting with Democrat John Garamendi, at 7 p.m. Monday (Oct. 8) in the multipurpose room on the second floor of the Student Community Center.

The ASUCD also announced that it had invited Republican Kim Vann, for a second forum. The time, date and location will be announced soon.

Garamendi and Vann are running in the Nov. 6 election in the newly drawn 3rd Congressional District, which includes the UC Davis campus. This is a shift for the campus, which now sits mostly in the 1st District, with Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, as the representative.

The 2010 census necessitated the reapportionment of California’s congressional districts. The new 3rd takes in all of Yolo County except West Sacramento.

Garamendi, former state legislator, insurance commissioner and lieutenant governor from Walnut Grove, has been the 10th District congressman since a special election in 2009. Vann is a member of the Colusa County Board of Supervisors, elected in 2006.

Traffic advisories: California Avenue, Dairy Road

Design and Construction Management announced the following traffic restrictions, due to construction:

• California Avenue — Closed 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 6) between Tennis Court Lane and the North Quad, during work on underground utilities.

• Dairy Road — One-way traffic control, with flaggers, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday (Oct. 8-13), to allow for installation of light poles on the Dairy Road Intramural Field. The lighting is part of a major renovation project that also includes the field’s conversion from grass to artificial turf.

Looking for a 'beater bike'?

Want to join the bike crowd, but don’t want to spend a lot of money?

Come to the first bike auction of the 2012-13 academic year: Saturday, Oct. 13, in the west entry parking garage, off Hutchison Drive east of La Rue Road. Parking and admission to the auction are free.

David Takemoto-Weerts, Bicycle Program coordinator, said more than 400 abandoned and unclaimed bikes will be up for sale. Most are fixer-uppers, he said, with average prices in recent auctions ranging from $30 to $40.

He said the auction is a good source for “beater bikes,” older cruisers, mountain bikes and parts bikes.

The auction schedule: inventory preview, 8 to 9 a.m.; sale from 9 a.m. until all of the bikes have gone up for bid — usually about three hours. The Bicycle Program accepts cash, check or major credit card with proper identification.

Years and years (and years) of campus service

The UC Davis Quarter Century Club, for employees with 25 years or more of service to the university, this year adds 183 new members and recognizes 65 members who have reached the 50-year milestone.

All 248 — who collectively have put in nearly 8,000 years of service to UC Davis — are due to be honored at the club's 73rd annual dinner meeting, Thursday, Oct. 25, in the Activities and Recreation Center Ballroom. See all the names here.

Human Resources identified the new members from among all classifications: faculty, staff and administration.

Dinner invitations have been mailed to the new members and the existing club membership. The club asks "veteran" members to connect with "newbies" to encourage them to join the celebration.

Register for Activities Fair

Registration is under way for the 2012 Activities Fair, scheduled form 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, on the Quad.

“The annual Activities Fair is a great way for student groups, campus programs and departments to recruit members, give demonstrations, perform and let the campus community know who they are and what they have to offer,” reads an email from the Center for Student Involvement, which is organizing the fair.

“This is a great opportunity to publicize your organization’s mission, activities, service projects and programs, and recruit new members from the thousands of students exploring how to get involved on campus.”

Yudof: White ‘excellent choice’ to lead CSU

UC President Mark G. Yudof says UC Riverside Tim White is “an excellent choice” to lead the California State University system.

The CSU board of trustees made the appointment on Oct. 4. White replaces Charles B. Reed, who retired after 14 years with the 23-campus system.

Yudof said UC will miss White, but can take consolation in knowing that UC will continue to have in the CSU chancellor’s office “a well-placed partner and ally in the fight to preserve public higher education in California.”

White became Riverside chancellor four years ago. Yudof said he will appoint an interim replacement in the near future and initiate a search for a permanent chancellor.
