  • Honda home seeks new live-in researcher
  • Hawkins contract extended to 2023

More than 27,000 of your colleagues had enrolled in Duo as of last Friday (Feb. 15). That’s a great start, representing 65 percent of the 41,853 faculty and staff members and student employees who are expected to use the multifactor authentication app for improved online security.

Information and Educational Technology posted the enrollment data in a TechNews article that also announced drop-in sessions next week, Feb. 25 to March 1, where you can get enrollment assistance. The help sessions are listed here.

Or, you can follow these simplified instructions.

The article also notes that Duo tokens are now available — through UC Davis Stores or in bulk via AggieBuy — as an alternative to using smartphones for multifactor authentication.

New volunteer program at vet hospital

The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital has launched a volunteer program whereby the participants would take on certain important tasks, allowing faculty, staff and students to give their full attention to patients.

Among the duties that could be assigned: medical record filing; greeting and escorting clients, and providing a hospitable environment for patients’ families; and running errands within the hospital.

Beyond the day-to-day activities at the hospital, volunteers might also help with Yappy Hour Puppy Socialization and “An Evening With Vet Med” lectures, and the hospital’s participation in campus events such as Picnic Day.

Honda home seeks new live-in researcher

UC Davis faculty, staff and graduate students are once again being invited to apply to live in the Honda Smart Home, which is coming available Sept. 1. The successful occupant would live in the fully furnished residence for a year and have access to the Honda Fit electric vehicle that comes with the home.

In addition to showcasing Honda’s vision for sustainable, zero-carbon living and personal mobility, the home functions as a living laboratory where the company, along with researchers from UC Davis and Pacific Gas and Electric Co. evaluate new technologies and business opportunities at the intersection of housing, transportation, energy and the environment.

The occupant must agree to specified research responsibilities, for example, recording any unexpected or unusual behaviors from the house systems: heating, cooling, lighting and hot water.

More information is available online. The webpage includes links to the Honda Smart Home Occupancy Agreement and Exhibit A (research assignment). Note that the exact content of the research can be custom-tailored to fit the occupant (the downloadable exhibit is an example).

To be considered, please read both documents thoroughly and complete this online form. For full consideration, submit the form as soon as possible but no later than 5 p.m. Friday, March 15. (Sorry, feline and canine occupants are not being considered at this time.)

Hawkins contract extended to 2023

Athletics Director Kevin Blue announced Feb. 13 that Dan Hawkins, the nation’s coach of the year in the Football Championship Subdivision after taking the Aggies into the NCAA’s Division I FCS playoffs for the first time, had signed a two-year contract extension, taking him through the 2023 season.

“I am very honored that Chancellor May and Kevin Blue believe in Aggie football, the progress and direction we are headed,” Hawkins said. A 7-1 conference record last season gave the Aggies a share of the Big West title for the first time, after which the Aggies hosted and defeated Northern Iowa in the NCAA playoffs.

Blue made the announcement on the same day the Aggies began winter practice. The team will open the 2019 campaign at Cal, Saturday, Aug. 31.
