Quick Summary
- Now available: Police, fire, security reports
- Shaun King to speak on ‘The New Civil Rights Movement’
The Recreation Pool is preparing for not one but two last splashes.
First, the pool’s regular season comes to a close this Friday (Sept. 29).
Then, on Saturday, Oct. 7, the pool will reopen for a one-day event called the “Last Splash,” because the Rec Pool as we know it is going away. It will be transformed over the next year (including next summer) from a single, all-purpose pool into two pools: a seasonal pool for recreation and a year-round pool for lap swimming, sport clubs and intramurals.
The locker room building will be given a face lift, brought up to code and get a new gender-inclusive restroom and shower; outside, a sand volleyball court will be added.
Campus Recreation and Unions, which oversees the 51-year-old pool, is holding the “Last Splash” as a public celebration, 1 to 6 p.m., to allow the community to enjoy the pool and snap some photos one last time.
Now available: Police, fire, security reports
Campus officials announced the availability online of the following reports:
• Police Accountability Board annual report and executive summary. The board also announced that its fall quarter public meetings will be held Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017. Following past practice, two meetings will be held simultaneously, noon to 1 p.m., on the Davis and Sacramento campuses. Some members of the board will attend the Davis meeting, others will attend the Sacramento meeting.
Here are the locations: Davis campus — Fielder Room, Memorial Union (second floor); and Sacramento campus — 3103 Education Building (4610 X St.). (When first posted, this news brief gave an incorrect room for the Davis campus meeting; the correct room is Fielder.)
Members of the public are invited to meet PAB members, learn more about the board’s work, and raise any issues or concerns they may have.
• Security and Fire Safety Report for 2017, as required by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998. To request a paper copy of the 2017 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report, send an email to PublicRecords@ucdavis.edu or write to the UC Davis Information Practices Officer, Office of the Campus Counsel, University of California, Davis, One Shields Avenue, Davis 95616.
Shaun King: ‘The New Civil Rights Movement’
Tickets went on sale this week for an evening talk by social justice activist Shaun King, speaking on “The New Civil Rights Movement,” Wednesday, Oct. 18.
He is being hosted by the Cross Cultural Center, which said in an email announcement: “By using social media to discuss news of police brutality, racial discrimination and other civil rights issues, King has become an indispensable source for extending crucial conversations about social justice and equality.
“King illuminates how this generation must come to grips with its own unique challenges. Instead of wondering who we'd be and what we'd do if we were alive in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, King asks us to see our present place in the modern movement for a more fair and just world.”
King’s talk will be in Main Theatre, Wright Hall. Doors will open at 6:30 for the 7 o’clock talk. Tickets are available online through the UC Davis ticket office, or you may visit the ticket office at the north end of Aggie Stadium. Admission is $5 for UC Davis students, $10 for others.
Students who need financial assistance to buy tickets are invited to contact the Cross Cultural Center’s Bruce Smail by email.
