The UC Davis library is helping to set a new standard for electronic access to information with its new Center for Advanced Information Technology. The center, created through a collaboration between the library system and computer services staff, offers a place to evaluate and explore how electronic networks can be linked in order to retrieve information from both the public and private sectors without cost. "Libraries are moving from a paper culture to an electronic culture," says Jennifer Koester, manager of the center. "Library information systems can now be linked with other institutional systems by connecting on-line resources." The systems in the center provide users with the latest technology in computer television and enables users to test software on a variety of computer setups. Located on the first floor of Shields Library, the center also demonstrates video conferencing across computer networks without satellite links.
