Mikael Villalobos, associate vice chancellor for the Office of Campus and Community Relations at UC Davis, has dedicated over three decades to making the campus more inclusive. On this month’s Face to Face With Chancellor May, the proud Aggie alumnus (’93, EdD ’14) discusses his career and how it has been driven by a commitment to the university’s Principles of Community.

In a conversation with Chancellor Gary S. May, Villalobos says one of his proudest accomplishments is the Campus Community Book Project, which he said “really aims at having dialogue, important discussions on controversial topics.”
“It is a beautiful example of what community building really is like,” Villalobos said.
As UC Davis celebrates the 35th anniversary of the Principles of Community, Villalobos is focused on keeping these values at the forefront of campus culture. Listen and hear his reflections on how the principles have evolved from being abstract concepts to being applied through the creation of various centers and working groups.
“I do think that it’s important that we find the opportunity to always speak about our principles, because at the heart of our principles is really for everyone to embrace,” Villalobos said. “Because, if not everyone embraces the principles, it makes it hard for us to create that community that we so much want to have.”
May agreed.
“I like to tell people that our principles and our values have permanence,” May said. “They don’t change with the direction of the wind or what’s going on.”
Tune in to hear more about Villalobos’ insights into his professional and personal life, his leadership philosophy, favorite artists and more.
