The Bohart Museum of Entomology invites the public to a game of hide-and-seek on Saturday (March 10), during an open house from 1 to 4 p.m.
Actually, this game of hide-and-seek is for insects with special ways of hiding — specimens like leafy katydids, barklike moths and clear-winged butterflies.
Open house visitors can see these insects and others like them, as well as live walking sticks, to hold and touch, said Tabatha Yang, the museum’s education and outreach coordinator.
Also, visitors will be invited to make stick insects from pipe cleaners, she said, adding that people can hide the “insects” at home.
Staff and students will be on hand to answer questions, Yang said.
The Bohart museum houses a collection of more than 7 million specimens, the seventh largest insect collection in North America, and is the home of the California Insect Survey, a storehouse of insect biodiversity.
The museum’s remaining weekend schedule for the 2011-12 academic year:
- Saturday, April 21 — 10 to 3 p.m., Picnic Day, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
- Saturday, May 12 — Pre-Moth-ers Day, 1-4 p.m.
- Sunday, June 3 — Bug Light, Bug Bright … First Bug I See Tonight, 1-4 p.m.
The museum is in 1124 Academic Surge. Regular hours: 9 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Admission is free.

Youth programs for summer
Campus Recreation is once again joining with the Davis Community Services Department in presenting the Children’s Summer Activity Fair, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday (March 10) at the Davis Farmers Market, held at Central Park, Second and C streets.
The fair, now in its sixth year, offers parents the opportunity to learan about campus- and city-sponsored summer programs, and others to be presented by local organizations and nonprofit groups. More than a dozen organizations are signed up for this year’s fair, which is free and open to the public.
“While you figure out which camps or programs work best with your schedule, your children will be entertained with a sampling of summer activities,” states a city of Davis news release. “Whether it is fun and games, arts and crafts, or silly song and dance, this event is sure to be a blast for all ages.”
Campus Rec has already posted its summer Youth Programs Guide (available for download here), and copies will be available at the fair. Online registration is scheduled to open at noon Thursday, March 15. Start the process here.
Spring break Boredom Busters
Campus Rec also offers a spring break program, Boredom Busters, for children in kindergarten through sixth grade.
This year’s dates are Monday through Friday, April 9 to 13, with full- and half-day programs available. Fees: Full day — $184 or $169 for Activities and Recreation Center members. Half day — $109, or $99 for ARC members.
