UC Davis' strategic goals of learning, discovery and engagement will be on display later this month when the campus hosts the UC Board of Regents on April 27-28, the regents' second such visit in five years.
"It's a pleasure to once again welcome the regents," said Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef, noting that their last visit was in April 2001. "We're eager to put them in touch with our campus family, to deepen their understanding of our special challenges and opportunities, and to provide at least a few moments of enjoyment and relaxation in the process."
The regents are scheduled to arrive in Sacramento midday Wednesday, April 27, and begin their formal visit with a 1:30-2 p.m. public comment period at the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center. They have scheduled a second, half-hour public comment period for Thursday morning, beginning at 9:30 a.m., at the Activities and Recreation Center (ARC).
The regents will spend Wednesday afternoon touring the campus before participating in an informal dialogue with faculty. They will cap the day with dinner and a Mondavi Center performance of the Kronos Quartet and the UC Davis Chorus.
The second day begins with an 8-9 a.m. breakfast and dialogue with undergraduate students, followed by a student-led tour of the ARC. Before the tour, Vice Chancellor Judy Sakaki and ARC Executive Director Tom Compton will provide an overview of ARC funding, and UC Davis athletics and recreational activities.
Following the public comment period Thursday morning, the regents will participate in a 10-11:15 a.m. discussion of graduate student challenges and constraints as viewed by both faculty and graduate students, as well as a presentation on the certificate program in business development. The program provides science Ph.D. candidates with business skills, while providing students in the Graduate School of Management an opportunity to explore the transition of a product or process from the laboratory to the marketplace.
The regents will then spend Thursday afternoon in Sacramento at the UC Davis Medical Center.
The visit to the Sacramento campus will begin with lunch, followed by a series of roundtable discussions on four key topics: community engagement, medical education, clinical care and research.
