Sometimes you can do it all! This Saturday (Oct. 21), start with a Hawk Walk at 8 a.m. (and stay for the California Raptor Center open house), attend the arboretum plant sale, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.; and then join a campus “sketchcrawl,” 12:30 p.m. until about 4:30.

Raptor Center Fall Open House — A family-oriented event, fun-filled and educational. Self-guided tour available, and you’ll have the opportunity for up-close viewing of the center’s resident ambassador birds, when handlers have the birds “on the glove.” The center’s museum will be open, and T-shirts, plush toys and other souvenirs will be available for purchase.

  • Hawk Walk — Bring binoculars; meet at the gate at 8 a.m. The California Raptor Center is off Old Davis Road south of Interstate 80; see directions here.
  • Open house — 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • Special presentations — Topics include raptor rehabilitation, identification, conservation and adaptations, 10 a.m. and noon.
  • Pizza and beer tasting — Samples provided by Hot Italian and Mendocino Brewing Co., noon-2 p.m.

Free admission; donations welcome. More information on the California Raptor Center.

Campus “Sketchcrawl” — Let’s Draw Davis! invites people to meet at 12:30 p.m. on the Memorial Union’s North Courtyard, where UC Davis staff member Pete Scully and sketcher will present a quick demonstration of how he sketches his favorite subject — fire hydrants. Then, participants will go off individually or in groups, whatever people prefer, before meeting up again at 4:30 p.m. to have a look at one another’s sketchbooks. The day will include a scavenger hunt, hunting for a list of things to find and sketch. “You don’t have to follow it,” Scully said, “but, if you do, you’ll get a sticker!” Free and open to the public — and kid-friendly. All you need is something to draw with and something to draw on! (And if you run out of those, the campus bookstore has great art supplies.)
