A UC Davis shuttle bus collided with a car that veered in front of the bus on Interstate 80 in Davis the afternoon of Dec. 1.

Eleven passengers were on the bus, and two of them complained of pain as a result of the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol. An ambulance took one of those passengers to a hospital for observation, and the hospital released this patient in short order.

Ambulances also carried away the car's driver and two passengers; all three people complained of pain.

The CHP reported that the crash occurred at about 12:30 p.m. on westbound I-80 near the Mace Boulevard exit. Officer Ken Walter said the car's driver braked abruptly because of slowing traffic, and the car spun into the next lane over, to the right. The bus was approaching in that lane and collided with the car.

Another CHP spokesman said there was no indication the bus driver contributed in any way to the crash.

Humberto Contreras, transportation supervisor with the UC Davis Health System's Parking and Transportation Services, said the driver has five years of experience with the shuttle system — and a perfect safety record during that time. The shuttle system runs between the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento and the Davis campus.

Of the 11 passengers on the bus at the time of the crash, 10 were UC Davis students who serve as volunteers at the medical center and the other was a patient returning from an appointment at the medical center, Contreras said.

A backup bus picked up the passengers — all except the one who went to the hospital — and took them to campus.
