Two student service units have come together under a new name that emphasizes what the units have always focused on: student success.
The new Student Academic Success Center is a merger of Advising Services and the Learning Skills Center.
“We are very excited about the opportunities that our merger has created to provide a more comprehensive and coordinated system that delivers services intended to increase student retention,” said Ward Stewart, who previously served as director of the Learning Skills Center and now runs the expanded operation.
“Our goal, as our new name indicates, is to promote student academic success,” he said.
The services are nearly the same, he said, adding that the merger brings administrative cost savings to help with overall budget cuts in Student Affairs.
The Student Academic Success Center incorporates the following from the Learning Skills Center:
• Assistance with study skills
• Workshops and tutoring in writing, English as a second language, science and mathematics
• TRiO Scholars Program
• Special Transitional Enrichment Program, or STEP
• Chemistry and mathematics placement testing
• “Pre” and “co” courses intended primarily for students in the Educational Opportunity Program
Ward said students take precourses in math and science in preparation for subsequent courses in those subjects, while students take co-courses concurrently with specific math and science courses.
The Advising Services unit contributed the following to the Student Academic Success Center:
• Educational Opportunity Program, or EOP
• Guardian Scholars Program
• Mentorships for Undergraduate Research in Agriculture, Letters and Science, or MURALS
• Pregraduate and preprofessional school advising
• Professional Letter Service
• Mathematics Diagnostics Testing Project
• Transfer Reentry Veterans Center, for transfer and reentry students, and students who are veterans. (The center is also the new home for the Veterans Affairs office.)
