Professor Fadi Fathallah has been appointed associate vice provost for Global Education and Services, in the Office of Global Affairs. The appointment took effect July 1 as a 50 percent position; he continues as the faculty director for UC Davis’ participation in the UC Education Abroad Program and independent study abroad programs.
His duties as associate vice provost include developing and providing global learning and curricular and co-curricular programs for UC Davis students as well as international students and scholars; supporting sponsored scholars and professionals visiting UC Davis; and promoting best practices in global education across UC Davis.
“Fadi is committed to working with our students and with our global community who wish to pursue lifelong education, including professional development and training,” said Joanna Regulska, vice provost and associate chancellor, Global Affairs.
Fathallah joined the faculty of the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering in 1999, and has done research and provided his expertise around the world. He’s a former chair of the UCEAP Council of Campus Directors and a UC Academic Senate ad hoc committee that reviewed UCEAP Middle East programs; and is a former director of the UCEAP Study Center at American University, Cairo.
Conrad now co-director of UC Global Health Institute
UC Davis’ Patricia A. Conrad and UC San Francisco's Craig R. Cohen have moved up in the leadership team at the UC Global Health Institute, appointed as co-directors who will work closely with the new director, Thomas J. Coates, in managing the institute’s operations.
Conrad, professor and associate dean for Global Programs in the School of Veterinary Medicine, formerly served as a co-director for the Global Health Institute’s Center of Expertise on One Health. Cohen, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at UCSF, previously served as a co-director of the institute's Center of Expertise on Women’s Health and Empowerment.
The institute announced Conrad’s and Cohen’s new co-director roles at the same time it announced Coates’ promotion from co-director to director. Coates, a professor of medicine and founding director of UCLA’s Center for World Health, succeeds Haile T. Debas, the institute’s founding director. Debas now adds the title director emeritus to his other title: chancellor and dean emeritus of UCSF.
DeLuca named deputy athletics director
Rocko DeLuca, who has 14 years of experience in athletics administration at the University of Colorado, the Denver Broncos, and, for the past six years, at the University of Massachusetts, has been named deputy athletics director. He has oversight of external affairs, which includes communications, development, ticket sales, sponsorships, and marketing and event presentations.
"Rocko brings a wealth of superb experience in Division I athletics to UC Davis,” Athletics Director Kevin Blue said in making the announcement Aug. 1. He said DeLuca "will strengthen our program to a significant degree as we build for excellence going forward.”
DeLuca had served as senior associate athletics director and executive director of development for UMass athletics since 2010, providing leadership in several areas, including fundraising, sport program administration and external relations.
