University of California, Davis, Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi today (July 5) announced the appointment of Terrance J. “Terry” Tumey as the school’s director of athletics.

The appointment of Tumey, a seasoned administrator who has served since 2009 as athletics director at Dominican University of California in San Rafael, culminates a comprehensive nine-month nationwide search.

Tumey was selected from a pool of four finalists who took part in campuswide interviews and presentations in late May and early June. The search process was guided by a selection committee comprising UC Davis faculty, students, staff and alumni, and athletics department representatives.

Tumey will be officially introduced at a campus event on July 10. He is expected to begin work on Aug. 1.

“In Terry Tumey, we’ve found the perfect person to take UC Davis athletics forward,” said Katehi, who weighed input from the selection committee, Academic Senate, individual community members, and a strategic assessment from former NCAA President Cedric Dempsey, an adviser during the search.

"In addition to over a decade of experience in athletics administration in the college and professional ranks, Terry brings acumen in financial planning and analysis — critical skills in these economic times — and personal experience as a successful student athlete at UCLA,” Katehi added. Tumey played football for the Bruins, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1988 and a master’s degree in business administration from UCLA’s Anderson School of Business in 1993.

"I am honored and humbled to serve the UC Davis community and become part of its rich athletics legacy,” Tumey said.

“UC Davis is synonymous with success — in the classroom, laboratory, community, and wherever its coaches and student-athletes compete. I am committed to upholding these values while maintaining a strong and clear vision for Aggie athletic excellence," he added.

Under Tumey’s leadership, Dominican University’s athletics program won Pacific West Conference accolades for highest student academic achievement (2010-11) and community engagement (2010). He guided Dominican’s successful transition from NAIA to NCAA (Div. II) status.

From 2001 to 2009 Tumey served in the San Francisco 49ers front office, rising from personnel assistant to director of football operations. He previously held coaching positions with the NFL's Denver Broncos (1999-2001) and UCLA Bruins (1995-99).

At UC Davis, Tumey inherits an athletics program with 23 intercollegiate sports, more than 600 student-athletes and a $23 million annual budget.

In 2011-12, five Aggie squads — women's cross country, gymnastics and track and field, and men's and women's golf — captured conference titles. UC Davis also placed second in the Big West Conference’s Commissioner Cup standings, its best-ever finish. A full member of the Big West Conference, UC Davis joins the Big Sky Conference this fall as a football-only member.
