UC Davis, which is pursuing designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, or HSI, has been recognized as a top 100 university for Hispanic and Latino students in annual lists compiled by the Hispanic Outlook on Education Magazine and released Monday.

UC Davis ranked 31st for the number of bachelor’s degrees awarded to Hispanic/Latino students (2,014) and 71st for total enrollment among four-year institutions (9,225).

The campus ranked second for the number of degrees awarded by four-year universities to Hispanic/Latino students in agricultural, animal, plant, veterinary science and related fields (183) and second for degrees in natural resources and conservation studies (89).

It ranked fourth in the number of degrees awarded to Hispanic/Latino students in three other categories:

• area, ethnic, cultural, gender and group studies (77)
• family and consumer sciences and human sciences (148)
• foreign languages, literatures and linguistics (71)

The magazine draws on 2021-22 academic year data from the federal Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data System.

Excelencia in Education, an organization founded to accelerate Latino student success, recognizes UC Davis as an emerging HSI. It developed the emerging HSI category — institutions with undergraduate full-time equivalent, or FTE, Hispanic enrollment of 15% to 24.9% — to track the growth of potential HSIs.

An HSI is a federally designated institution with an FTE enrollment of undergraduate students that is at least 25% Hispanic students. The U.S. Department of Education awards the designation to institutions that meet certain criteria in addition to the enrollment threshold, counted as of the end of the award year before the institution’s application. The designation enables institutions to apply for critical funding to support student success, innovation and institutional transformation, benefiting all students.
