The annual Disability Awareness Symposium — this year with a faculty member’s keynote address on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and attention deficit disorder — will be held Thursday, Oct. 9, with the Accessibility Tech Fair.

For the first time, the symposium will span the causeway in real time: As Julie Schweitzer gives her ADHD-ADD talk on the Davis campus, she will appear on video on the Sacramento campus.

Schweitzer, associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and the director of the ADHD Program at the MIND Institute, will speak on the topic “Myth or Reality?” — referencing ADHD and ADD.

She will share research on ADHD-ADD, including prevention and the development of innovative treatment methods.

Schweitzer is leading a large, National Institutes of Health-funded study examining ADHD and its relationship to self-control and academic success during adolescence and young adulthood.

Fredna Karnegas, manager of Disability Management Services, said: “The goal of this year’s topic is to shed light on this hidden disability and to help our campus community better understand this disability and to know the resources available.”

The symposium’s physical location — the multipurpose room in the Student Community Center — will include a resource fair on disability awareness. The symposium runs concurrently with the Accessibility Tech Fair in the same room.

The symposium and tech fair will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

Schweitzer's talk is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. People on the Sacramento campus are invited to watch and listen in 1222 Education Building.

Accessibility Tech Fair

Campus units and outside vendors will present information and product displays. Not all of the “products” will involve semiconductors — we’re talking about some four-legged helpers from Canine Companions for Independence, Gold Rush Champions Chapter.

Other participants will include the Student Disability Center, Academic Technology Services and UC Davis Stores’ TechHUB, as well as Disability Management Services.
