Eric Peregrine, new director of choirs, says next week’s concert by the Choruses of UC Davis “celebrates the joy, resilience and healing power of singing together,” something which has been difficult if not impossible during the pandemic.

Now, happily, the singers can be physically together again — and as such their Dec. 3 concert is titled “A World Anew,” which also happens to be the name of one of the works to be performed, Yon Monn Nouvo (A World Anew), by the Haitian composer Sydney Guillaume.

The UC Davis Jazz Bands, Concert Band and Percussion Ensemble are also coming together for concerts next week — as the Department of Music presents five programs in four days.

The Percussion Ensemble concert and the regular Noon Concert are free to attend. Tickets must be purchased for in-person attendance at the other concerts, by the Jazz Bands, Concert Band and Choruses. • Jazz Bands of UC Davis — Performing music from the great American jazz tradition, including tunes by Chick Corea, Benny Golson, Count Basie and Thad Jones. Directed by Otto Lee. 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, Recital Hall, Ann E. Pitzer Center.

• Concert Band of UC Davis — Performing works by film composer Alan Silvestri, from the animated Polar Express; Alton Adams, the first African American to serve as the Navy bandmaster; noted American bandleader Helen May Butler; British-Sierra Leonean composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor; and Chinese and Chinese American composers Jack Loh and Yan Pang. Directed by Pete Nowlen. 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, Jackson Hall, Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts.
• Shinkoskey Noon Concert — Featuring music department lecturers Jolán Friedhoff (violin) and Kerstin Allvin (harp), performing works by J.S. Bach, Gaetano Donizetti and Camille Saint-Saëns. 12:05 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, Recital Hall, Ann E. Pitzer Center.
• Percussion Ensemble: “Loose Ends” — Directed by Chris Froh, students will perform works by Andy Akiho, John Cage, Emmanuel Sejourné and others. 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, Recital Hall, Ann E. Pitzer Center.
• Choruses of UC Davis: “A World Anew” — All three of UC Davis’ choirs — the University Chorus (a medium-large ensemble), the Chamber Singers (a treble choir) and the Early Music Vocal Ensemble — will sing a repertoire spanning the 14th to 21st centuries and featuring works by living composers of diverse backgrounds, Guillaume, Melissa Dunphy and Rosephanye Powell, as well as the English Renaissance composer William Byrd. 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, Jackson Hall, Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts.

Peregrine. who uses they/them/their pronouns, is making their concert debut at UC Davis after coming here in July as a lecturer as well as the director of choirs in the Department of Music. They have a background in conducting and teaching across North America, including stints with the University of Arizona Collegium Musicum, Tucson Masterworks Chorale, the Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists and the University of British Columbia Choirs.
