As more people return to their offices, let’s not forget two other important aspects of working on campus: coffee and food!

Some Dining Services facilities (including Scrubs Café) are already open and more will soon follow, while Silo restaurants and the Coffee House are set to reopen Wednesday, Sept. 22, the first day of instruction. Look for signature sandwiches, a Hawaiian-themed menu, allergen-free foods and more at various eateries.

Food trucks will return to the Silo and Mondavi Center on Sept. 22. The lineup, when finalized, will be posted to the Dining Services website.

“While many parts of our dining operation have changed during the pandemic, one thing that hasn’t changed is our culinary teams’ commitment to serving great food,” said Kraig Brady, director of Dining Services. “UC Davis Dining Services’ mission is to provide a dining experience that is the least stressful and most enjoyable part of our students’ day.

Two Peet’s Coffee locations are already open, in the Silo and Activities and Recreation Center; and the King Hall Peet’s will reopen Monday (Sept. 20). A new kiosk at California Hall is set to open later in the fall.

Also open: Sage Street Market Café, in UC Davis West Village, serving burgers, sandwiches and more; and Scrubs in the Health Sciences District, serving sandwiches, salads, breakfast burritos, coffee and more.

New themes, no allergens

Next to reopen will be the three dining commons and Latitude, opening in a staggered schedule starting Monday (Sept. 13) for Moove-In and orientation. All three dining commons boast new Allergy-Friendly Aggies platforms with food that is free of eight of the most common allergens.

“This is huge for our students (and their parents) that have food allergies and are concerned about the safety and preparation of their food,” Brady said. “It also adds another layer of support for our students regarding their dining experience.”

Latitude Market, the to-go side of the global eatery, has added a Hawaiian-themed menu with a rotating lineup of cooked-to-order lunch plates, a build-your-own poke bar, tropical shave ice and smoothies. Hawaiian music will complete the theme.

The Silo Market and The Gunrock, also at the Silo, will reopen later this fall. The Gunrock, a relaxed café that serves local beer and welcomes students, faculty and staff, will have a new Aggie Athletics theme, represented by memorabilia on the walls, coupled with multiple television monitors to lend a sports bar-like atmosphere.

The Gunrock will also feature a revamped menu of “delicious burgers, chicken sandwiches, as well as amazing onion rings, loaded fries and loaded quesadillas,” Brady said.

Dining Services has also expanded its catering options: In addition to the full-service Olive & Vine Catering, it now offers Olive & Vine Companion Catering, simpler offerings designed for quick setup at small events and meetings.

Coffee House adds menu items

Limited staff — about 175 students, compared to 450 in a typical year — means limited operations at the Coffee House, said the director, Darin Schluep.

“We are hopeful that we can ramp back up to full service as the students come back to campus and start looking for convenient employment in a fun, energetic environment,” he said. “In the meantime, we’re excited to be operating again and appreciate the patience of our customers as we work to return back to our pre-COVID level of service.”

Highlights at the CoHo include expanded acai bowl offerings at Swirlz, a simplified menu and all-day breakfast burritos at TxMx Grill, and a new line of signature sandwiches at the Fickle Pickle Deli. Those new sandwiches include a Korean BBQ chicken, a pastrami Reuben, a Mediterranean with grilled eggplant, a crispy buffalo chicken, and the “Gunrock” (tri tip, caramelized onions and blue cheese). All sandwiches are now available toasted for no additional charge.

Some of the stations at the CoHo, including Ciao, Cooks and Croutons, will remain closed through at least the fall quarter.

The CoHo South Café in the Student Community Center will add “bowls” to its menu, including the “Southwest” (fried sweet potatoes topped with bacon, onion, corn, black beans, fresh jalapeno, avocado and cilantro, served with a cilantro-lime crema), “Teriyaki” (chicken and veggies in a sweet teriyaki sauce, served over steamed rice), “Bangkok” (fried tofu and veggies topped with peanut sauce, served over chilled chow mein) and “Mediterranean” (fried falafel, tomato, cucumber, parsley and Israeli couscous topped with hummus and a lemon-tahini dressing).

BioBrew, in the Sciences Lab Building, will remain closed until at least January, Schluep said.
