Dining Services is preparing once again to serve up ample portions of its commitment to shopping local, and to sustainable production methods and the humane treatment of animals.
The campus community and the general public are invited to partake during the Farm to College celebration, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday (June 6) on the lawn within the Segundo residential complex. Farm to College is held twice a year, and next week’s is No. 15.
The menu includes Summer Citrus Free-Range Chicken Salad, Cage-Free Egg Frittata, Summer Citrus Tofu Salad and BBQ Pork Sandwich, as well as Fair Trade Chocolate Brownies, Gunther’s Ice Cream and Fresh Organic Strawberries, and Larry & Luna’s Coconut Bliss Ice Cream. Vegan offerings include the tofu salad, and the Larry & Luna’s ice cream; vegetarian and gluten-free items also will be available.
You can also try the dried tomato pesto from the campus’s own Russell Ranch, and fair trade-certified chocolate.
The program also includes music by alumna Alicia Murphy, playing “humble pop,” and the West Nile Ramblers.
Farm to College also includes educational activities and opportunities to explore where Dining Services procures its food and how it is produced, and the power of the region’s food community (and food dollars).
Craft activities will emphasize sustainability — in UC Davis No. 1 Cool School notebooks and recycled bike tube jewelry — thanks to Aggie ReStore, the Campus Center for the Environment and the California Student Sustainability Coalition.
The Farm to College dinner is priced at $11.80 for UC Davis employees (with staff ID or Staff Assembly pin) or $14.75 for the general public. If you are a meal plan holder, simply swipe your card.
